Power Dressing

Hello Chicas,

Gone are the days when formal wear denoted boring suits in unflattering colors. With the corporate organizations becoming more liberal with the dress code, it's time to get adventurous and experiment with what you wear to work. As the old age saying goes " Dress not for the job you have, but the one you want", dressing for success doesn't stop with the job interview. Your personal style in your workplace projects your creativity and certainly boosts up your confidence. Focusing on outward appearance may sound superficial, but let's accept the fact that turning up at work in a dull, sloppy outfit will get you nowhere. Formal clothing for women can mean many different things from pant suits to pencil skirts, we have an array of choices to pick from.

Here are a few ways to dress to impress:

  • The most obvious advice would be to wear well-fitted clothes.  Wearing clothing that is too tight is unprofessional on the other hand dressing up in an ill fit outfit might make one look sloppy. Tailoring your cloth is a great way to look sharp.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with bright colors. A statement blazer in royal blue or a red blouse, but remember to keep the other elements sober.
  • Print clash is another way to make your outfit look edgy. However, don't go overboard with it, mix and match statement with simple to work this trend.
  • Put your best foot forward. While pumps in black or nude are a staple piece in one's wardrobe, oxfords and brogues are a great alternative to killer heels.
  • Accessorizing is the key to make office wear fun. A statement necklace or a scarf/tie is bound to make heads turn at your workplace.
  • Lastly, take extra care to wear clean and neat outfits. Tucked in shirt and wrinkle free clothing are a must at a workplace.

Coming to my outfit, I have paired a grey pencil skirt with a pastel blazer. The lace detailing at the hem of the skirt added a feminine touch to an otherwise very basic skirt. The powder blue blazer is trending right now. While black and navy blazers are a timeless and versatile piece in one's wardrobe, blazers in sugar colors like powder blue, mint, pastel pink are a refreshing alternative to don this summer. To accessorize the outfit, I traded my statement necklace for a skinny scarf, another trend from the '70s, which is very popular with the celebrities right now. I love the fact that how an accessory as simple as a scarf can take one's look to  another level. I have used a white scarf and basically knotted it around my neck in the fashion of a tie. For footwear, I opted for black Oxfords and mirror aviators. A sleek pony tail with bold red lips completed the look.

Vintage Vibes!

Hello Chicas,

How have you all been? I started my new year with a mini vacation to Darjeeling and Gangtok. I had one heck of a time on the hills, enjoyed playing in the snow, dressed up to my heart's content, ate delicious food and last but not the least did some street shopping. I have shared a few pictures taken from my cellphone on my Instagram and Facebook account. I'm glad to have taken this break, couldn't have asked for a better start of the new year.

Coming to today's outfit, I shot this one a while back when there was no trace of winters. I fell in love with this maxi skirt, the moment I saw it. Maxi skirts are a must have in one's wardrobe as they are versatile and can be worn all year round. The maxi skirt I have worn is in a beautiful light pink shade with  pretty pleats on it which added to its flirtatious beauty. I have paired the skirt with a delicate floral embroidered lace top. The mock neckline of the cropped blouse gave a very vintage look.

As the outfit was all romantic and girly, I decided to make it edgy by accessorizing it with combat boots. Round sunglass and dainty pearl baubles added to the retro vibes. The low bun I'm sporting was very last minute and I have no idea how I did it. To complete the look, I went for a bold red pout which brightened up the entire outfit.

The Grunge Look!

Hello Chicas,

Today's OOTD is a grunge look, a style based on the music scene around 90s which saw the beginning of rock music made popular by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam. The main idea behind the grunge fashion is an unkempt messy look created with inexpensive clothing. This style combines elements of punk mixed with working class clothing.

Here are a few ways on how to rock the grunge look:

  • To work out a grunge look, all you need to do is revisit your wardrobe and find out those super old worn out clothes which you have discarded. You can also pay a visit to the local thrift shops in your city or go street shopping.
  • Go for ripped, super torn denims which are actually a trend now. You can also rip your own denim for a more authentic grunge look.
  • Say yes to layering. Add an old sweater or plaid shirt over a casual tee or dress or tie it around your waist.
  • Grunge footwear mainly includes sneakers and converse. Invest in a pair of chunky combat boots which you can pair with torn stockings or colored knee high socks.
  • Go for a messy hairdo, wear it loose, or you can even bleach it to go with the unkempt look. Makeup wise, go heavy on the eye makeup. The dark smudgy Gothic look goes best with this style. If you don't want to opt for heavy eye makeup, you can add a bold red or maroon lipstick.
  • Last but not the least, don't forget to flaunt the "I don't care" attitude which is the main message behind the grunge style.
Coming to my outfit, I'm wearing a maxi T-shirt dress with a thigh slit. Whether it's the charcoal gray color or the Ed hardy inspired rose and skull print, the dress speaks super grunge to me. I have added a red plaid shirt around my waist to layer the outfit. Accessory wise, leather combat boots and my super exploited black back pack completed the look. I left my hair open and added a bold red lip color to elevate the grunge look.

Back to Basics!

Hello Chicas

Today's post is about a casual outfit which I recently wore for a quick bite followed by shopping!

I wore an over sized t-shirt with a crew neck line in a vibrant yellow shade. The reason why I bought this t-shirt is the slogan on it which is so relatable. I totally feel overdressed all the time as I literally dress up like I'm going to a red carpet event or some homeless drug addict, nothing in between. :P I'm a big hoarder of such graphic tees and when paired right, this basic t-shirt can definitely become a style statement.

A few tips from my side on ways to wear your basic t-shirt and up the style quotient:

  • Now that there is a chill in the air, layer your basic tee with a sleek jacket in a bold color.
  • Add a statement neck piece, a dainty rhinestone chain or multi-layer silver ones,  to go from plain to glam.
  • Pair your t-shirt with an elegant midi skirt for a casual street chic look. Midi skirts were a rage last season so I'm sure we all have quite a fabulous few in our wardrobe.
  • Ripped or distressed denims are another ongoing fashion trend and nothing looks more flattering than pairing it with a basic white tee.
  • Another way to style your basic tee is by accessorizing right. Whether it's a floppy hat or pointy heels, throw on some quirky accents to elevate the look.
I have styled my basic tee with an asymmetrical wrap skirt. I love teaming two opposite stuffs together, like in this case a cool and casual tee is paired with this well defined semi-formal skirt. Accessory wise, my new flatform sneakers which I have been wearing everywhere since the day I bought it, and black backpack completed the look.

Fearless in Red!

Hello Chicas,

Monsoon is in full swing here in Kolkata making it impossible to shoot. All I'm doing these days is sitting at home and watching back to back seasons of Game Of Thrones and I'm totally in love with it. I'm awestruck by the grandeur of the places it has been shot in, the intriguing characters and the fashion, from royal medieval inspired gowns to elegant hairdos.

Coming to the OOTD, this is one outfit which worked out the way I had planned in my head. The red asymmetrical wrap skirt is a recent buy from F21, I think I own their entire online collection and they should definitely consider me their brand ambassador. :D :P This wrap skirt can be styled in various ways from a formal shirt to a relaxed Cami. I have paired it up with a tiger print top which has these black chain straps adding a sexy edge to it. The strapy heels I'm wearing are my new found love and a total eye grabber. As the shoe was loud and center of attention, I avoided accessorizing and went with classy red lips and cat eye frames.

Stripe it right!

Hello Chicas,

Today's post is all about breaking the rules. Remember how you were told to avoid horizontal stripes as it makes you look bigger. Well, it turns about to be one of the many fashion myths. In fact, this particular striped midi dress made me look thinner and taller. The myth here is that the horizontal stripes draw the attention across your body, making you look wider rather than the vertical stripes which elongates one's body. Believe it or not, horizontal stripes look flattering on all body types when styled the right way. Here are a few ways to stripe it right:
  • The trick here is to opt for the right silhouette, and print according to your body type. Taller girls can wear a striped maxi dress or jumpsuit, but for petites, short dress or tucked in shirt with horizontal stripes will work well.
  •  A striped garment should be chosen in such a way that it draws attention to your best assets like a bodycon dress on an hourglass body or a relaxed dress on fuller body type.
  • One can always layer a striped outfit with a bright blazer or a denim jacket to break the horizontal stripe pattern.
  • You can also opt for chevron stripes instead of the normal straight ones to make it more fun.
  • Don't shy away from colored stripes, they are great for summers.
  • For those who are still in two minds whether to try this trend, take baby steps, add monochrome striped heels or a handbag to your wardrobe.
Coming to my OOTD, I wore this monochrome midi dress last year during the summers. The midi length of the dress, small stripes and relaxed fit worked out well for me. The lace detailing on the neckline of the dress made it look even more sexier. As it was a shopping day out, I carried this huge metallic tote and reflective aviators in blue with ruby lips for a pop of color.

Pretty Pleats

 Hello Chicas,

How are you all doing? I'm totally home bound these days, preparing for my exams having no time for myself due to which my workout regime has gone for a toss. Can't wait to hit the gym again.

Coming to today's outfit, it's a casual summer attire. The pleated maxi skirt is the center of focus of today's outfit which I have paired with a graphic print crop top to dress down the look. This maxi skirt is currently a favorite in my wardrobe, the reason being its beautiful leaf green hue and the amazing fit. Also, it's flowy silhouette makes it a comfortable wear in this scorching heat.

Accessorized the outfit with retro round sunnies, chain linked neck-piece worn as a bracelet and a studded envelope clutch. And of course Ruby Woo lips to up the glam quotient. :)
Enjoy the pics.

Peplum paired with Mini Skirt

 Hello Chicas,

Today's outfit post is on Peplum top. For those who are not aware of the Peplum trend, it's characterized by a flared ruffle around the waistline and was first introduced by Dior. If worn right, Peplum looks flattering on all body types. People who are skinny can wear it to give an illusion of a fuller waistline while those who are curvy can wear it to further enhance their curves without drawing attention to the problem area.

The Peplum top I'm wearing is a recent purchase from Faballey which I won't recommend to anyone as I wasn't really satisfied with the material and quality. The top is in a simple T-shirt form with the ruffle in leather which I have paired it up with a floral mini skirt. I have added some gold accents in the form of gold chain neck-piece and watch. Also, my favorite reflective aviators in yellow completed the look. So glad to finally flaunt it in the scorching heat! So sorry, but you guys will see more of it in the next few posts. :)

Red Tux Jacket with Monochrome Joggers

Hello Chicas,

Firstly, thank you all for your wonderful wishes on my last post. Those sweet words were really encouraging, keep them coming. :)

Winters are at full swing in Calcutta these days and it's the best time to flaunt those long jackets and booties. I'm totally enjoying the cold spell with homemade delicacies by  dearest mommy and shopping online under the blanket.

Coming to today's outfit; I have styled a red tux jacket from Dorothy Perkins which I recently purchased from Jabong. So happy to see international labels finally available online in India. As the tux jacket looked more formal, I have added a monochrome jogger pant to make it a more fun and casual outfit. I hate winters for the monotonous blazers and jackets which I try to make it more lively by pairing them up with printed or colorful bottoms. I'm obsessed with jogger pants these days, they are so comfy that I can actually sleep in it. Apart from the comfort factor, they come in a wide variety so you can style it as per the occasion.

Accessory wise, I have added a red clutch and ankle length suede boots. Also, some arm and ring party to pep up the look.
