That '70s Look

Hello Chicas,

I had been terribly caught up with assignments since the day I joined NIFT. Juggling between studies and blog left me with no time for self pampering. But thank god for Durga Puja, we got an off for a week and I finally got the opportunity to take a much needed break from the daily mundane routine. So I ended up spending the entire last week lazing around at home, meeting my favorite people, binge eating desserts while skipping my workout sessions. However, I did go for a few shopping trips so I guess that more than compensated my cardio sessions. :D

Coming to my look, I have taken inspiration from retro Bollywood fashion. I happened to work on an assignment recently on 70s and 80s Bollywood fashion where I got to study the style sense of the yesteryear actors and actresses. From wide legged trousers to platform shoes, these fashion elements made quite a style statement back then in the 70s which are now back in vogue. Among the various style divas of the golden days, I particularly loved Zeenat Aman and Dimple Kapadia's style. They were pretty bold and confident in whatever they wore and I could literally spot pieces from my wardrobe flaunted by them. So I thought of putting together these elements to create a retro look. I have already posted a look wearing the button down mini skirt sported by Dimple Kapadia in the famous movie Bobby which you can check out here. So this time I thought of working the midi length and decided to pair the most abused piece in my wardrobe, the denim button down midi skirt with a ribbed crop top in red. The mock neckline of the crop top gives a very retro appeal while the tinted yellow sunglasses are a reminiscence of Zeenat Aman's look from the famous song "Dum Maaro Dum". I have also added a neckerchief in polka dot to accessorize my look further keeping in mind the dip in temperature these days. A dusty pink pointed pumps with quirky cupcake purse completed the look.

Power Dressing

Hello Chicas,

Gone are the days when formal wear denoted boring suits in unflattering colors. With the corporate organizations becoming more liberal with the dress code, it's time to get adventurous and experiment with what you wear to work. As the old age saying goes " Dress not for the job you have, but the one you want", dressing for success doesn't stop with the job interview. Your personal style in your workplace projects your creativity and certainly boosts up your confidence. Focusing on outward appearance may sound superficial, but let's accept the fact that turning up at work in a dull, sloppy outfit will get you nowhere. Formal clothing for women can mean many different things from pant suits to pencil skirts, we have an array of choices to pick from.

Here are a few ways to dress to impress:

  • The most obvious advice would be to wear well-fitted clothes.  Wearing clothing that is too tight is unprofessional on the other hand dressing up in an ill fit outfit might make one look sloppy. Tailoring your cloth is a great way to look sharp.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with bright colors. A statement blazer in royal blue or a red blouse, but remember to keep the other elements sober.
  • Print clash is another way to make your outfit look edgy. However, don't go overboard with it, mix and match statement with simple to work this trend.
  • Put your best foot forward. While pumps in black or nude are a staple piece in one's wardrobe, oxfords and brogues are a great alternative to killer heels.
  • Accessorizing is the key to make office wear fun. A statement necklace or a scarf/tie is bound to make heads turn at your workplace.
  • Lastly, take extra care to wear clean and neat outfits. Tucked in shirt and wrinkle free clothing are a must at a workplace.

Coming to my outfit, I have paired a grey pencil skirt with a pastel blazer. The lace detailing at the hem of the skirt added a feminine touch to an otherwise very basic skirt. The powder blue blazer is trending right now. While black and navy blazers are a timeless and versatile piece in one's wardrobe, blazers in sugar colors like powder blue, mint, pastel pink are a refreshing alternative to don this summer. To accessorize the outfit, I traded my statement necklace for a skinny scarf, another trend from the '70s, which is very popular with the celebrities right now. I love the fact that how an accessory as simple as a scarf can take one's look to  another level. I have used a white scarf and basically knotted it around my neck in the fashion of a tie. For footwear, I opted for black Oxfords and mirror aviators. A sleek pony tail with bold red lips completed the look.

Gingham Girl!

Hello Chicas,

Today's OOTD is a casual one! As the weather gets warmer, it's time to ditch those sweaters and heavy duty jackets and slip into light cozy winter layering. So being in tune with the weather, I wore this distressed denim pencil skirt which has a frayed hem. I have paired the skirt with a cropped gingham shirt, which is my most favorite among all the check prints. The red and navy blue shade of the shirt added a much needed pop of color to the outfit. Pencil skirts are my current favorite, love how one can transform the look from a formal office wear one by pairing it with a shirt to a laid back casual one by throwing on a simple tee.

I have accessorized the outfit with yellow reflective aviators to go with my golden spiked necklace. To complete the look, I decided to keep the other accents in neutral color, so opted for a backpack and ankle length boots in tan.

Damsel in Distress-ed!

Hello Chicas,

Today's OOTD is what I wore for shopping few days back. The weather here in Calcutta has been insanely hot and humid since last week. In fact, it seems like Summers are back in this city. As it was a shopping day out, I chose to dress up in a casual attire and clicked a few pictures to share with you all.

I went for this ripped denim joggers which is extremely comfortable due to its relaxed fit. I prefer wearing boyfriend denims or ones with relaxed fit as it goes well with my body type. I have paired up the joggers with a bright orange tank top which can be tied around the waist. I personally love wearing bright and bold shades and also mixing different colors. Sneakers are a big thing right now and no I'm not talking about pairing it up with a casual sporty outfit or the look I'm sporting here. People nowadays dressed up in top to toe couture are following it up with sneakers. Now isn't that cool? I totally love the idea as it's a more comfort oriented trend and I'm so eager to try it out. I finished my look with black and white flatform sneakers. I was never really a shoe gal until I saw this one online, sneakers with a little height was just what I was looking for. My recent sale pick, a black backpack completed this sporty casual look.

Stripe it right!

Hello Chicas,

Today's post is all about breaking the rules. Remember how you were told to avoid horizontal stripes as it makes you look bigger. Well, it turns about to be one of the many fashion myths. In fact, this particular striped midi dress made me look thinner and taller. The myth here is that the horizontal stripes draw the attention across your body, making you look wider rather than the vertical stripes which elongates one's body. Believe it or not, horizontal stripes look flattering on all body types when styled the right way. Here are a few ways to stripe it right:
  • The trick here is to opt for the right silhouette, and print according to your body type. Taller girls can wear a striped maxi dress or jumpsuit, but for petites, short dress or tucked in shirt with horizontal stripes will work well.
  •  A striped garment should be chosen in such a way that it draws attention to your best assets like a bodycon dress on an hourglass body or a relaxed dress on fuller body type.
  • One can always layer a striped outfit with a bright blazer or a denim jacket to break the horizontal stripe pattern.
  • You can also opt for chevron stripes instead of the normal straight ones to make it more fun.
  • Don't shy away from colored stripes, they are great for summers.
  • For those who are still in two minds whether to try this trend, take baby steps, add monochrome striped heels or a handbag to your wardrobe.
Coming to my OOTD, I wore this monochrome midi dress last year during the summers. The midi length of the dress, small stripes and relaxed fit worked out well for me. The lace detailing on the neckline of the dress made it look even more sexier. As it was a shopping day out, I carried this huge metallic tote and reflective aviators in blue with ruby lips for a pop of color.

Maxi Kimono

Hello Chicas,

In today's post I will be sharing with you all my latest summer purchase which happens to be a maxi kimono.

The over-size kimono is in ivory with sheer fabric and beautiful thread embroidery. I specially love the back of this kimono which has a butterfly embroidery. After buying it, I was super confused as to what to pair it with as I am not in the shape to wear shorts right now. :P After hunting my wardrobe I got hold of this plum jumpsuit which was a sale purchase last year and found it perfect to go with the kimono.

I have completed the look with golden cuff, a statement ring and chain linked necklace. Also a wide brim fedora to shun the sun! :)

Red Tux Jacket with Monochrome Joggers

Hello Chicas,

Firstly, thank you all for your wonderful wishes on my last post. Those sweet words were really encouraging, keep them coming. :)

Winters are at full swing in Calcutta these days and it's the best time to flaunt those long jackets and booties. I'm totally enjoying the cold spell with homemade delicacies by  dearest mommy and shopping online under the blanket.

Coming to today's outfit; I have styled a red tux jacket from Dorothy Perkins which I recently purchased from Jabong. So happy to see international labels finally available online in India. As the tux jacket looked more formal, I have added a monochrome jogger pant to make it a more fun and casual outfit. I hate winters for the monotonous blazers and jackets which I try to make it more lively by pairing them up with printed or colorful bottoms. I'm obsessed with jogger pants these days, they are so comfy that I can actually sleep in it. Apart from the comfort factor, they come in a wide variety so you can style it as per the occasion.

Accessory wise, I have added a red clutch and ankle length suede boots. Also, some arm and ring party to pep up the look.
