Adieu 2016

Hello Chicas,

I have been missing in action for quite a while now. The reason behind it is a month full of chaos. Firstly, I had small pox, thanks to my elder brother who flew back from Bangalore with chicken pox and the moment he left all fit and fine, I caught the virus from him. After that, I was busy with my first semester examination for another couple of weeks. Thankfully, it went pretty well and since then I had just been lazing around until last Monday when I finally joined a gym. It feels amazing to be back to the daily workout regime. Not only it's the best way to stay fit, but also a great stress buster for me.

In today's post, I am sharing a special new year's eve outfit inspiration. But, before talking about the look I would like to thank my each and every reader for all the love and support. 2016 has been a great year for me, from getting the opportunity to work with amazing people to join the most coveted fashion college in India, NIFT. And all of this wouldn't have been possible without the support of my wonderful parents and my elder brother, they have always believed in my dreams and stood by me through thick and thin.

Coming to the new year's eve look, I have incorporated my favorite trend of the year, metallics. With the holiday season and endless parties in full swing, all of us want to look our best and the trendiest and metallic is one such trend one just can't go wrong with. I am wearing a mauve metallic midi skirt with accordion pleats. The soft color of the skirt with the metallic sheen makes for an amazing combination for party hopping in style. I have paired the skirt with a black one shoulder top which has this peek-a-boo sleeve. Keeping in mind the evening look, I have made the outfit more dressy by teaming up the skirt with a silk blouse and adding a silver spherical purse and a pair of black pumps. However, there are a numerous ways of styling a metallic skirt. For a casual day outing, one can pair it with an over-sized sweater and sneakers whereas a crisp white shirt with a statement necklace would be perfect for a more formal look. I have kept the accessories minimal with a bronze bracelet come watch and pearl earrings. Side swept hair with a red pout completed this glamorous party ready look.

Nip in the Air

Hello Chicas,

The term Pinafore brings back memories of old school days, some may even associate this particular style with apron dresses, however styling them the right way gives an effortless chic look. For the upcoming cold weather, one can opt for pinafore dresses in suede or corduroy in tan shades. They are pretty low maintenance and goes with just about anything. From sweaters and tees for a casual laid back look to frilly blouse and crisp shirts for a sleek formal look, there are a number of cute ways you can layer the pinafore dress.

Recently I picked up this pinafore dress in corduroy which is apt for the current fall weather and also, goes perfectly with the 70's mood which is dominating this season. Last year, I had worn one denim pinafore dress with a crisp white shirt and given it a sporty twist, you can check it out here. So, this time I thought of styling it differently by pairing it up with a cold shoulder flowy top underneath which gives the entire outfit a very feminine look. Going with the school girl vibe, I have added a back pack and tied my hair loosely in a ponytail. Grey mules and a layered choker put up the look together. I have been obsessed with mules right now. They are practically everywhere around, from runways to the red carpet. Flat mules and block heel mules are high on comfort factor and are the biggest shoe trend this season.

Launch of "Shidur" collection by Ambrish Damani

Hello Chicas,

Although it's been a while since Durga Puja got over, I got to relive that Pujo feeling at the preview of designer Ambrish Damani's latest collection "Shidur" hosted by Pen Twister. The event turned out to be an extended Dashmi celebration with the other fellow bloggers of the city. We had a gala time, rejoicing over the tune of dhak while indulging in some sindur khela. Before I go ahead with the details about the latest collection, here is a brief introduction about the designer.

About the Designer
Ambrish Damani has been involved with fashion design for over 15 years.
The chirpy effervescent Kolkatan has a rich family lineage of entrepreneurs in the corporate world and through this label he is pushing boundaries and expressing his passion for design.
His collection reflects a whiff of fresh air & his effervescent personality. His designs are not only very wearable & comfortable, but offers something for every occasion. He specializes in graceful salwar-kameezes and petite saris along with matching accessories.

About the Collection "Shidur"

The collection "Shidur" is an exquisite range of festive wear in shades of red and brown. The use of antique embroidery over organic silk gives a very rich traditional appeal. I personally loved the addition of tassels on the hemline of dupattas and scarves. The intricate detailing along with the bright hues are a perfect combination for the upcoming festive season.

That '70s Look

Hello Chicas,

I had been terribly caught up with assignments since the day I joined NIFT. Juggling between studies and blog left me with no time for self pampering. But thank god for Durga Puja, we got an off for a week and I finally got the opportunity to take a much needed break from the daily mundane routine. So I ended up spending the entire last week lazing around at home, meeting my favorite people, binge eating desserts while skipping my workout sessions. However, I did go for a few shopping trips so I guess that more than compensated my cardio sessions. :D

Coming to my look, I have taken inspiration from retro Bollywood fashion. I happened to work on an assignment recently on 70s and 80s Bollywood fashion where I got to study the style sense of the yesteryear actors and actresses. From wide legged trousers to platform shoes, these fashion elements made quite a style statement back then in the 70s which are now back in vogue. Among the various style divas of the golden days, I particularly loved Zeenat Aman and Dimple Kapadia's style. They were pretty bold and confident in whatever they wore and I could literally spot pieces from my wardrobe flaunted by them. So I thought of putting together these elements to create a retro look. I have already posted a look wearing the button down mini skirt sported by Dimple Kapadia in the famous movie Bobby which you can check out here. So this time I thought of working the midi length and decided to pair the most abused piece in my wardrobe, the denim button down midi skirt with a ribbed crop top in red. The mock neckline of the crop top gives a very retro appeal while the tinted yellow sunglasses are a reminiscence of Zeenat Aman's look from the famous song "Dum Maaro Dum". I have also added a neckerchief in polka dot to accessorize my look further keeping in mind the dip in temperature these days. A dusty pink pointed pumps with quirky cupcake purse completed the look.

Other on trend items like cold shoulder, lace up style, oversize dresses were also a part of their collection. The store looked extremely peppy and attractive with the pop colors and shiny metallic garments. What I wore:

Coming to my outfit, I am wearing a multi-stripe dress in moss green and off white. The earthy tone of the dress makes the outfit very unique which is usually very difficult to find in Indian wear. The floral applique across the neckline and hem of the sleeves lends an ethnic touch to this fusion wear. Also, the coral and golden color of the applique adds a much needed pop to the outfit. While the overall look of the gown is very casual and light, one can always accessorize it for a glamorous party look. Following the earthy tone of the dress, I opted for oxidized half moon statement earrings and ring. I love how these muted retro accents can create such a huge impact without it being too flashy. To complete the look, I went for side swept hair and orange lips.

Wardrobe Recycle

Hello Chicas,

"A wardrobe full of clothes, but nothing to wear." How many of you can relate to this feeling? Like any of you, even I face this situation while heading out. We all have this irrational fear of repeating outfits. And more so due to the latest trend of documenting every look on the various social media channels. However, we need to put it out there that repeating an outfit is no crime and yes, you will certainly not be hunted down by the fashion police if found wearing that same red dress. All you need is a little recycling and mis-matching to turn your age old outfit into a new one.

So, recently while planning for an event I literally turned my wardrobe upside down to find something new to wear and I got my hands on this lace skirt. Having worn it once before I was skeptical about wearing it again. However, while trying it out I figured another way of wearing it which is as a tube dress. To add some twist to the plain jane dress, I added pompom balls to its hem line. These little colorful balls of happiness are such a mood lifter. They have the power to brighten any look and one just cannot ignore them. Earlier I had made a diy pompom shoe which turned out pretty good and therefore I thought of using them on an outfit. These pompom balls can be easily bought from local fabric stores. Online shopping portals like Amazon and Flipkart also sells packs of multi color pompom balls, but they are charging an exorbitant price for it so I would suggest you to get it from a local shop. Now the only thing you need is to sew them on to your outfit or accessories, I somehow managed it myself but you can take the help of a tailor. And, ta-da you have your very own pompom dress ready.

I have given this outfit a bohemian look by pairing it up with a kimono. This paisley print kimono is my current favorite as it literally goes with everything in my closet. For accessorizing the outfit, I went for layered silver necklaces and some golden bangles. A tan sling bag and tie up heels completed the look.

Scarlett X The Broke Chica

Hello Chicas,

With the festive season around the corner, each one of us are on the hunt to get hold of as many traditional outfits as possible. To make this task easier for you all, I am sharing with you my very first blog post on an ethnic look. Yes, it has been more than a year since I started my blog, but I really didn't get a chance to flaunt ethnic wear. People who know me are aware of the fact of me turning up in pujas in Pajamas. :') For me traditional outfits are usually reserved for weddings and other family functions. I'm not very fond of wearing them on a day to day basis as I am way too clumsy to carry it off. I recently got the chance to meet this amazing designer Shweta Dudani and her collection of Indian wear left me completely spellbound. So, I got hold of this outfit to showcase it on my blog, but before going any further, let me introduce you to her brand SCARLETT.

About SCARLETT

ORIGIN: Three fashion obsessed friends with no degree in the field whatsoever started the label in a room in their paying guest.

NOW: A full fledged workshop with people working round the clock to manufacture both off the rack and on demand couture collection. Specializes in designing clothes that are a trade off between traditionally rich in terms of ethnic forms of embroidery and contemporary in its silhouette.
Currently run by Shweta Dudani.

You can find them on the social media here:

Facebook link: Scarlett by SNG
Instagram: Shweta Dudani

Coming to my outfit, I chose an ethnic jumpsuit in contrasting colors, maroon and peach. The upper part of the jumpsuit has intricate floral zardozi detailing with sheer cut out on the waist and back. Whereas, the bottoms made up of silk give a very royal touch to the attire. The best part about the jumpsuit is the  skinny dupatta which gives the outfit an ethnic touch. Managing a dupatta is one helluva job for me, but this pleated stitched dupatta made my life so much easier. Also, you can play with the dupatta and style it in various ways, or even ditch it for a modern fusion look. To compliment my outfit, I opted for a statement ring and half moon drop earrings in golden and maroon. A cream snakeskin minaudiere and maroon lips tied up the look together.

Gone With The Wind

Hello Chicas,

As I turn a year older today, I look back and realize that life has been a roller coaster ride for me. In life you may not get what you want, but someday you will surely get what you deserve. People who know me are aware of the fact that I had been pursuing CA for the past few years. However, whenever I use to daydream (which by the way, I do a lot) about the future, I always thought of myself as working in some swanky fashion company. So, very recently after all these years it occurred to me that to fulfill this dream of mine I need a degree in fashion. :D
And, finally, after clearing a few tests and interviews, I got the chance to be a part of the very prestigious fashion college, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata. I am pursuing Master's in fashion management there and thoroughly enjoying every bit of it. Never in my wildest dream had I thought that I will actually be a part of NIFT and be able to make a career shift. This past year has been incredible to me, from travelling to some amazing places, to moving a step closer to my goals, I feel extremely blessed and thankful to God and my parents who have always been my support system. So, guys dream on and work hard to achieve them.

As we all know, off-the-shoulder silhouettes are all the rage right now and very summer friendly. Personally, I love this shoulder peeping style and find it very sexy. They look flattering on every body type and come in various forms. A few easy peasy ways of styling them are:

  • You can dress an off -shoulder dress by pairing it up with heels or dress them down by adding sneakers and a backpack.
  • For a fun beach look you can wear a bardot top with shorts or skirts.
  • Whereas, people who are not so comfortable with a full bardot neckline can opt for cold shoulder tops or dresses.
  • For office goers, a structured off-shoulder top with a pencil skirt or trousers is a great way to try this trend.
  • You can go bare neck or accessorize with layers of necklace or just flaunt a statement choker for a boho-chic look.

Coming to my birthday outfit, I chose an off-shoulder dress in floral print. The dusk blue color of the dress was the first thing which caught my eyes. And the smocking pattern with the off shoulder neckline further enhanced the beauty of the dress.
I have styled my off shoulder dress with a sleek silver choker. As the dress was pale and subtle, I thought of adding a colorful punch with pom pom shoes which I created myself using pom pom balls on a black lace up wedge heels. These colorful bunch of cuteness looks good on almost everything and I'll be very soon sharing with you all a post on how to make your own pom pom shoes. I opted for a tan fedora and tassel sling to complete the look. Also, this is my first time with purple lips and I'm totally loving it. MAC Heroine is an amazing shade and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for purple lip color. All thanks to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for making purple lipstick so popular post her red carpet appearance in Cannes. I wanted a mid-parted straight hair look, but the weather God had something else on his mind so please excuse my frizzy, wavy hair.

Power Dressing

Hello Chicas,

Gone are the days when formal wear denoted boring suits in unflattering colors. With the corporate organizations becoming more liberal with the dress code, it's time to get adventurous and experiment with what you wear to work. As the old age saying goes " Dress not for the job you have, but the one you want", dressing for success doesn't stop with the job interview. Your personal style in your workplace projects your creativity and certainly boosts up your confidence. Focusing on outward appearance may sound superficial, but let's accept the fact that turning up at work in a dull, sloppy outfit will get you nowhere. Formal clothing for women can mean many different things from pant suits to pencil skirts, we have an array of choices to pick from.

Here are a few ways to dress to impress:

  • The most obvious advice would be to wear well-fitted clothes.  Wearing clothing that is too tight is unprofessional on the other hand dressing up in an ill fit outfit might make one look sloppy. Tailoring your cloth is a great way to look sharp.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with bright colors. A statement blazer in royal blue or a red blouse, but remember to keep the other elements sober.
  • Print clash is another way to make your outfit look edgy. However, don't go overboard with it, mix and match statement with simple to work this trend.
  • Put your best foot forward. While pumps in black or nude are a staple piece in one's wardrobe, oxfords and brogues are a great alternative to killer heels.
  • Accessorizing is the key to make office wear fun. A statement necklace or a scarf/tie is bound to make heads turn at your workplace.
  • Lastly, take extra care to wear clean and neat outfits. Tucked in shirt and wrinkle free clothing are a must at a workplace.

Coming to my outfit, I have paired a grey pencil skirt with a pastel blazer. The lace detailing at the hem of the skirt added a feminine touch to an otherwise very basic skirt. The powder blue blazer is trending right now. While black and navy blazers are a timeless and versatile piece in one's wardrobe, blazers in sugar colors like powder blue, mint, pastel pink are a refreshing alternative to don this summer. To accessorize the outfit, I traded my statement necklace for a skinny scarf, another trend from the '70s, which is very popular with the celebrities right now. I love the fact that how an accessory as simple as a scarf can take one's look to  another level. I have used a white scarf and basically knotted it around my neck in the fashion of a tie. For footwear, I opted for black Oxfords and mirror aviators. A sleek pony tail with bold red lips completed the look.

Styling Culottes

Hello Chicas,

Cropped pants are one of the hottest trends this season, but styling them can be pretty tricky. Being a petite, I dread of anything which falls at the mid-calf area. Wearing them is one of the biggest fashion faux pas I have committed in the past which made me look short and stubby. However, after spotting them everywhere around I thought of giving it a go.

Styling Culottes

Culottes or gauchos pants are basically wide-legged cropped pants, which comes in different lengths. Despite of their awkward length, there are numerous ways to actually work around this trend.

  • Finding the right length is the key to ace this look. While tall ladies can effortlessly work the mid calf length, petites  should stick to knee or ankle length culottes which would create an illusion of longer legs.
  • As they mostly come with a mid/high rise, the best way to style them for a pear or apple shaped figure would be pairing them up with a crop top so that it doesn't make your waist look wide.
  • As they come in different prints and fabric they can be totally work appropriate as well. A pair of well tailored culottes with a structured blazer is sure to turn heads at your work place.
  • Tribal or Ikat print culottes can be worn with a breezy flared top for a bohemian look. You can also check out culottes in ethnic styles available in Max stores. You can add a kurta over it for a fun Indo-western look.
Lastly, the cropped hem brings attention to your footwear. So, complete the look with a pair of chunky heels or pointed pumps.

How did I wear culottes.

Coming to my outfit, I wore a black ankle length culottes. The ribbed pattern with elasticized waist makes it a cool and comfy casual wear. I have paired it up with an orange floral top. Orange has been my favorite color since my childhood. I have an entire section of orange clothes, lipsticks and accessories. I feel orange is totally my color as it really flatters my dusky complexion. Anyway, I can go on and on about my love for orange so let's not get into that. Other than the color of the top, I loved the dramatic bell sleeves and the plunging v-neckline. A black choker and round sunnies gave the entire look a retro touch. I have accessorized the outfit with a tan backpack and chunky block heels.

While wandering around a mall, the BIBA store is something which always manages to catch my attention. A Neutral Saga

Hello Chicas,

Neutral colors continue to dominate the fashion industry after taking over the fall fashion last year. I'm personally all about wearing bright and loud colors so this time I thought of trying something different and challenged myself to create a look with neutral colors.

So, what are neutral colors?

A color can be considered as a neutral on the basis of how effectively it blends into with other colors. Neutral or universal colors comprise of black, white, grey and brown. Different tints of the above mentioned shades is also referred to as neutrals, like, ivory, cream, tan, camel. Although they may sound dull and boring to many of us, but styling them is the easiest job. Also, one cannot ignore the fact that these colors are so versatile, I mean we can just throw a pair of beige shoes on any outfit as they go with almost every color.

Why neutrals?

  • A neutral outfit can be one's go to to look. They literally go with everything and anything.
  • One can wear them again and again, unlike other outfits in statement colors which cannot be repeated often.
  • Neutrals are versatile as you can wear them a number of times with other neutral as well as bright colors thereby creating multiple looks.
  • Neutrals are always on trend and can be worn all year round.

How to wear neutrals?

  • For someone who is not yet ready to give into this trend, they may experiment with different shades of colors like navy blue or pale pink which are also neutrals.
  • Neutrals build the foundation of our basic wardrobe. Buying basic tees or trousers in tan or military green is the best way to incorporate them in our daily wear.
  • Neutral accessories are the best investment. They go with most of the outfits and helps to achieve a sleek look. Footwear, belts and handbags in neutrals are classic buys and never go out of style.
  • One can also add a pop of color to a neutral outfit. A red blouse with a white skirt or a tamarind tote with an all black ensemble will break the otherwise monotonous look.
  • Special attention must be given to the fit and shape. As the color is not the major focus here so, naturally the attention diverts to details like fit. An ill-fitted neutral outfit can make one look sluggish.
How did I wear neutrals?

Coming to my outfit, I chose a pleated maxi skirt in olive which has buttoned sides and an attached buckle belt to it. I was pretty happy with the color and the material of the skirt, but something which totally annoys me about maxi skirts from Forever 21 is their length. They are abnormally long, like even after wearing a pair of 5 inch heels. Anyway, being a petite I am used to this situation so got the skirt customized by a local tailor. I have paired the skirt with a peach floral print top which has a round neckline and bell sleeves. The blue floral motifs on it added a pop to the outfit. Accessory wise, I have again opted for neutral colors, a brown tassel sling and a black choker. Finally, a messy braid and coral lips completed the look.

It's Raining Ice-Creams

Hello Chicas,

Being a big foodie, summers have always been synonymous with ice-creams for me and that's the reason when I came across this beautiful maxi shirt dress with over all ice-cream print on it, I couldn't afford to let it go. Plus, the pastel baby blue color is such a refreshing treat for the eyes. I have been pretty much obsessed with shirt dresses these days as they are absolutely perfect for the current weather. Also, they are quite versatile as they can be styled in numerous ways. As a shirt dress is basically a longer version of shirt, one can dress it up by wearing it as a dress along with some statement accessories or dress down the look by layering it over our everyday outfit for a more casual look. They come in a variety of shape and length, thus giving one ample options to choose from.

Coming to my outfit, I have accessorized it with these really cute heart shaped sunglasses and a white box purse. For footwear, I have opted for Roman shoes which are back in vogue. A dainty charm bracelet and pink lips completed the look.

Peppy Palazzos

Hello Chicas,

Come summers and we all look for clothes which are comfortable without compromising on the style quotient. One such pleasant wardrobe staple piece is palazzo pants. The relaxed silhouette from top to bottom makes ample room to move around freely. The best part about them is they compliment all body types by making a slim figure look fuller whereas a curvy shaped body leaner. The key to styling them successfully is balancing proportions. People with petite frames can opt for high waist palazzo pants, which would further elongate their legs while taller ladies can add a kurta for an Indo-Western fusion.

Coming to my outfit, I am wearing a rust orange palazzo with micro pleats on it. I have paired it up with a white cold shoulder top with bell sleeves. Accessory-wise, I have opted for an oxidized silver choker necklace. To compliment the warm earthy tones of the outfit, I have added a tan fringe bag and blush pink pumps. A floppy hat to shun away the harsh sun rays completed the look.

Slip Dress

Hello Chicas,

Today's post is about slip dress which originated during the 90's and was made famous by supermodels like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

Slip dresses are the so called lingerie inspired clothing which one can wear outside their bedroom. They usually come in plunging v-neckline with spaghetti straps. Lacy hems coupled with silk muslin silhouette make it look like a sensuous night wear. I opted for a casual cut out slip dress sans the lace detailing. The lime color screams summer and the vented neckline provides such a relief from hot sunny days. Slip dresses come in a variety of lengths ranging from mini to midi ones. For those who are a little apprehensive about trying out this teeny tiny dress, worry not as they can be worn in following different ways for a more reserved look:
  • Pair it up with a basic tee or a shirt underneath for a casual day look.
  • Add a pair of sneakers to tone down the sexiness of the slip dress.
  • Layer it up with a denim jacket or a long line shrug during cooler days.
  • Add a structured blazer to balance the flowy silhouette of the dress.
  • Lastly, if you have tried the above ways of wearing them, embrace them as it is and own the look.
As the dress was simple, I have styled it with some funky accessories. I have opted for two of my most loved accessories this season. One is this super cute cupcake purse in metallic pink and the other a multi-colored striped pumps. Somehow looking at them gives me a massive urge to indulge my sweet tooth in red velvet cupcakes. :D

Bohemian Rhapsody

Hello Chicas,

The soaring high temperature these days makes us all wish to be clad in minimal clothing sans accessories. I came across one such feather like outfit recently while sitting at home with a tub of ice-cream and hunting for summer clothing online. It was a beautiful peasant dress with a delicate paisley detailing along the neckline and sleeves. Peasant dresses are characterized by easy flowing silhouette with a certain folksy element in the form of floral embroidery and dramatic sleeves. It's perfect for people looking for comfort without compromising on the style quotient. Coming to my outfit, the soothing white color of the dress and the airy chiffon material makes it appropriate for summers. This ethereal tunic like dress can also be worn over a pair of denim or leggings. To give the look a bohemian twist, I have added a golden floral head gear, which is nothing but a hair band worn across the forehead. I have never been a big fan of accessories and considering the current weather condition I opted for metallic tattoos, which I feel is such a great alternative to the usual ornaments. A tan fringe bag along with gladiator heels tied up the look together.

Shine Bright like a Diamond

Hello Chicas,

Metallic is making a comeback and has been touted as one of the biggest trends of 2016. Gracing the runways of Gucci, Channel, Alexander McQueen and the likes, this is one trend that is sure to stick around for a while. However, styling metallics can be a daunting task as overdoing this trend might make one look like someone from the future. Even I had my doubts in embracing this style as the only metallic piece I have ever had in my wardrobe, is a Barbie doll in a flashy pink dress.

After exploring various online websites, I settled for a pleated metallic midi skirt in silver. Feeling a little adventurous after buying this magnificent skirt, I went on with pairing it with a bold orange perforated crop top. I remember having a similar "parental advisory" tee in my high school days, which was highly frowned upon back then, by my mommy. Hihi. I have kept the accessories low key by adding a black quilted purse and a pair of Oxfords. For those who are a little shy to try this trend, you can opt for accessories like shoes and bags in metallic which makes for a very versatile and classic item in one's wardrobe. Balancing is the key to work this look, so don't go overboard and stick to neutral colors if you are wearing one metallic piece. Also, Mango has recently launched an entire metallic collection, so you know where to head to after checking out the pictures below. :)
